Forty-one year old Doreen Rutherford is a mother on the verge of the unthinkable. Exhausted after having six babies and losing one to stillbirth, Doreen has become frequently confused and finds herself hearing voices. Suffering with undiagnosed postpartum psychosis, she becomes increasingly more negligent and sometimes violent with her five young children. A concerning incident with her youngest daughter leads Doreen into counseling where she begins to confront the horrors of her past; a brutal gang rape, a cold and loveless upbringing, and a secret she has worked desperately to keep hidden. When a voice in her head, she is convinced belongs to God, begins to instruct her in ways that terrify, yet provide the relief of a solution, Doreen must try to find the clarity she needs in order to choose between the life that is drowning her and the permanent consequences of carrying out these orders. Told in raw, visceral prose, Dead Babies examines what creates a mother on the edge, and dissects the very humanness of acts that we, as a culture, find monstrous.
