The present report of Mr. Maryanov is based primarily upon research undertaken during his most recent stay in Indonesia, February - August, 1958, and consequently incorporates considerable important new material. Mr. Maryanov spent the period 1953-1955 in Indonesia as an instructor in the Ford Foundation's Indonesian-English Language Training Program. Duping 1955-56 he undertook research on Indonesia in the Netherlands; the following year he was at Cornell University as a Research Assistant in its Modern Indonesia Project, and during 1957-58 carried on research at Cornell and in Indonesia under a fellowship from the Ford Foundation.
