Deer utilization in Papua

Beschreibung

Deer has been introduced by Dutch to Papua in 1928 and widely distribute to all parts of the areas presently. Related to its utilization, deer habitat, population and utilization has been studied in particular highland parts of Manokwari at the Bird's Head Peninsula. Among the mammal species, the Rusa deer (Cervus timorensis) is one of the most important species because of its value as source of food and its antler and leather, as artistic home decorations.

Freddy Pattiselanno is a faculty member at the Animal Science, Fishery and Marine Sciences, Universitas Negeri Papua, Manokwari, West Papua, Indonesia. He has been involved in deer conservation in Papua since 2000, and later after he was awarded Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) Scholarship.
