Autorenporträt
John Millington Synge (1871-1909) wurde in Dublin geboren und studierte in Paris französische Literatur, wo er W.B. Yeats kennenlernte. 1899 besuchte er die einsamen Aran-Inseln vor der Küste Irlands und ließ sich von der kraftvollen, bilderreichen Sprache der Fischer inspirieren. Er schrieb sechs Theaterstücke und zwei Prosawerke, bevor er siebenunddreißigjährig an Krebs starb.
