With the advances of sensing technology, sensors
today are capable of sensing, communicating,
self-scheduling, data processing, and moving from one
place to another. Sensors have become an important
part of our daily life. For example, sensors are used
to secure important infrastructure, monitor the
traffic, and protect our borders. However, wireless
networks that can be formed from such sensors still
face many challenges due to sensor limitations in
energy, memory, computation power, and sensing
reliability. In addition, hot spots in the monitored
field may require sensors with special
characteristics. Moreover, the required monitoring
time may vary from one application to another;
keeping this network alive during the monitoring time
poses another challenge.
In this book, we address the deployment of mobile
heterogeneous sensors in fields with hot spots for a
specific period of time. The book looks into the
realistic sensor deployment parameters and formally
defines the deployment problems. Moreover, it
explores some of the current solutions to the problem.
