Der bekannte Mediziner Johann Christian Gottfried Jörg (1779-1856) war der erste Ordinarius für Frauenheilkunde an der Universität Leipzig. Durch zahlreiche Publikationen erhob er die Geburtshilfe zur eigentlichen Wissenschaft und machte sich außerdem um die Modernisierung der Kinderheilkunde verdient.Nach einem Studium der Naturwissenschaften spezialisierte sich Jörg sehr bald auf die Frauenheilkunde. Im Jahre 1805 wurde er zum Doktor der Medizin und Chirurgie ernannt, ab 1810 hatte er die Leitung der Leipziger Entbindungsanstalt inne. Jörg stand in der Tradition von Lucas Johann Boer und war Verfechter eine abwartenden, genau nach Indikationen vorgehenden Geburtshilfe.Vorliegendes Werk gilt als das erste wissenschaftliche Lehrbuch der Orthopädie und ist damit ein Klassiker.
