Richard Strauss, geboren am 11. Juni 1864 in München und gestorben am 8. September 1949 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, ist das erste Kind des Musikers Franz Joseph Strauss und seiner Frau Josepha, die aus der Bierbrauer-Dynastie Pschorr stammt. Er wurde bekannt als Komponist, für seine orchestrale Programmmusik (Tondichtungen), seine Liedschaften und Opern. Richard Strauss war zudem eine bedeutender Dirigent und Theaterleiter.
Er begann mit 6 Jahren zu komponieren und bekam schon während seiner Gymnasialzeit Kompositionsunterricht. Mit 21 Jahren war er Musikdirektor in München. Franz Liszt war sein Vorbild für erste Tondichtungen. 1889 war Richard Strauss 2. Kapellmeister in Weimar und nahm Herausforderungen als Dirigent an. Weitere wichtige Stationen folgten, so auch die Gründung der Salzburger Festspiele 1920. 1894 heiratete er die Sopranistin Pauline de Ahna und, 1894 kam ihr erster Sohn Franz zur Welt.
