The new generation of FACTS controllers is based on Voltage Source Converter (VSC) using self-commutating devices like GTO and IGBTs. The application of these controllers brings up new challenges, not only in hardware implementation, but also in design of controllers. On-going deregulation exercise in the electric power industry has inspired considerable research interest in the area of improvement of the power factor in power systems. The book reports an investigation on effects of small signal model control scheme on improvement of the power factor in power systems, using a STATic synchronous COMpensator (STATCOM). The control scheme is simulated and all implementing peripherals are designed. The book contains five chapters. Chapter 1 gives briefly description of STATCOM and its modeling has been described in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 brings the details of control strategy small signal methods and its simulations in MATLAB/SIMULINK platform and implementing hardware design is described in Chapter 4. In Chapter 5, the principle and design of an artificial transmission line for 576 miles is given.
