This work investigates software models and tools for developing a kind of user interfaces named WIMP+ user interfaces, which deal with continuous, real-time, parallel, and ubiquitous computing. First, it studies the evolution of user interfaces and elaborates on WIMP+ user interfaces. Then, it investigates high level models for user interface realization. By picking up the application of design pattern modeling methodology to structure different low level user interface models, it proposes
a framework which encompasses an interdisciplinary pattern system for aiding in the development process. Moreover, it documents a WIMP+ software architecture pattern and develops a pattern based object-oriented framework with multiple programming layers for WIMP+ user interface construction. Furthermore, it demonstrates the practicability of these design patterns and frameworks through developing three WIMP+ user interfaces for controlling a model robot. Meanwhile, during the development, the related application domain pattern and HCI patterns are also researched and documented.
