Poetry. Women's Studies. Anna Vitale has done something special with her first book DETROIT DETROIT. Autobiographical in nature, but deeply political in its multiple styles, Vitale rethinks race, gender and sexuality from a city that mirrors the failing American dream. Born in Detroit and attending its public schools, Vitale was a white girl formed by Black social life. Her parents relocated to the suburbs when she was in high school, transplanting her into an environment that felt more like Friday Night Lights than anything that resembled the first decade-and-a-half of her life in Detroit. DETROIT DETROIT is a paean to her home and innocence. It focuses on injustice that can only be dreamt of. It is an ode to the memories and consciousness that she shared with her fellow classmates, friends, and Detroit.
