In the present work, an attempt was made to formulate buccoadhesive gel for the treatment of oral submucousal fibrosis. The aim was to assess the influence of type and concentration of gelling agents: Carbopol 934p and sodium carboxy methyl cellulose on the quality attributes of buccoadhesive gel. All the proposed five buccoadhesive gel formulations were prepared. The prepared gels were evaluated and In-vitro release of metronidazole and lycopene at 240 min from buccoadhesive gel determined. The release of lycopene not satisfactory from optimized gel formulation, to increase the release of lycopene we can be use release modifier/modifiers are incorporated in to the formulation. It could be promising local alternative treatment of OSF and could be subjected further In-vivo study in rats by inducing OSF then after treating with optimized preparation, skin irritation test and stability study will be performs. In conclusion 1% Carbopol: 3% SCMC can be use as vehicle for buccoadhesive drug delivery system to the oral cavity because of their good buccoadhesion, spreadability, extrudability and release profile reported.
