The basic process in a cement production plant is baking of the preheated and completely dried up raw material (carbonates and silicates) mix in a kiln to produce high quality output product called clinker. If the temperature is higher than the required temperature of sintering raw material, there will be over baked product and lowering of the temperature below will result into an under baked product. Producing the clinker with high quality requires an efficient control of the kiln temperature using appropriate kiln temperature controller. The Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller, though simple but ineffective when used in nonlinear and complex systems such as cement kiln if its gains are not properly tuned. Although Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) is effective in nonlinear system but its stability is insufficient and its applied range is limited due to its poor static performance. In this work, FLC and PID controllers were hybridized to form Fuzzy-PID controller to control cement kiln burning zone temperature process which is a multivariable nonlinear problem, to overcome the usual problems with PID and FLC. It finds application in cement and allied industries.
