Worn tools are usually less effective especially in terms of the tillage,seeding and weed control. Rapid ploughshare wear is identified as a major constraint facing farmers in Ghana. Many soil bins (and machines) have been developed with varying degrees of success to model the conditions found in the field. However, in Ghana and other sub-Saharan African countries, facilities are lacking in research institutions and colleges. This necessitated the need to develop a wear test equipment for carrying out research in the laboratory. They equipment works quite well and can mimic what happens on the field.

Mr. Francis Kumi is a Principal Researcher in the Agricultural Engineering Department at Cape Coast University, Ghana. He holds MSc in Agricultural Machinery Engineering. He is currently a doctoral student at Jiangsu University, China. His research interests are in abrasive wear of tillage tools and the development of transplanters.
