Articulation is the production of sounds with identifiable acoustic characteristics. Normal hearing children acquires the adult level articulation skills by the age of 7-8 years. But in case of hearing impaired children acquisition of speech and language is characterized by delay in development of articulation. The specific nature of that delay is not well understood. Usually, the articulation defects among hearing impaired children are found to be different in kind from those found in normal hearing children. For clinical intervention with the hearing impaired it is necessary to identify the nature and phonological processes in articulation. However, like other aspects of development of speech and language, articulation development must also be assessed using language specific tools, which are unfortunately lacking in many Indian languages. A major objective of this study is to develop a Picture Articulation Test in Oriya (PAT-O) so that a much felt need for proper clinical assessment of Oriya speaking children can be fulfilled.
