Zr-based bulk metallic glasses possess a unique combination of strength and toughness along with high elastic modulus. This property can be exploited in various defence applications. Glassy phase in Zr-(Ti,Nb,Pd)-Al-(Ni,Cu), Zr-Al-TM (Co,Ni,Cu)-M (Pd,Au,Pt) and (Zr,Ti)-Be-(Ni,Cu) alloys has been produced in ~10 mm diameter rod by Cu mould casting. Nanocrystalline/ nano-quasicrystalline precipitates can be incorporated in the amorphous matrix through a suitable heat treatment. It has been shown that the nanocrystalline embedded glassy matrix can be bent up to 180o without fracture.
