She graduated trade school to become a seamstress in 1964. In the 1980s, she became an insurance agent, licensed for life and health coverage. In those years, she was also actively involved in community service, where she directed two different preschool nurseries for ten years each. She obtained an associate's degree with the intention of becoming an underwriter. At fifty-five years, she retired early. After the death of her oldest son in 2004 and the economic crash in 2005, she returned to work. In 2009, she moved to Georgia to be near her remaining son and his family. She returned to the AME faith of her youth and currently works full time in health and wellness management.
