Geboren am 12.2.1828 in Portsmouth; gestorben am 18.5.1909 in Flint Cottage bei Dorking.Nach dem frühen Tod der Mutter wuchs er bis zum 14. Lebensjahr in seiner Geburtsstadt auf, besuchte dann für zwei Jahre ein Institut der Herrnhuter Brüdergemeinde in Neuwied (Deutschland). Nach einem Jurastudium war er einige Zeit als Anwalt tätig, wechselte aber bald zum Journalismus und veröffentlichte erste eigene Arbeiten. In Italien war er 1865/66 als Kriegsberichtserstatter tätig; nach der Rückkehr lebte er als Schriftsteller in Surrey.Quelle: Wikipedia
