Der Klappentext verspricht ein “fesselndes Psychodrama” und da Anita Shreve ihre Figuren sehr glaubwürdig herausgearbeitet hat und ihre Gefühle sehr einfühlsam und nachvollziehbar beschreibt, gingen mir viele Szenen wirklich unter die Haut. Der Verlust des Partners nach 16 Jahren Ehe trifft Kathryn völlig unvorbereitet und stürzt sie in ein tiefes Loch. Nicht selten hatte ich beim Lesen eine Gänsehaut, besonders als Kathryn vor der grausamen Aufgabe stand, ihre pubertierende Tochter über den Tod des geliebten Vaters zu informieren.
Obwohl die Trauer(arbeit) in dem Buch eine große Rolle spielt, kommt durch die mysteriösen Umstände des Absturzes und die häppchenweise gestreuten Andeutungen auf Jack’s Doppelleben auch ordentlich Spannung in die Geschichte. Der Schwerpunkt liegt allerdings immer auf dem Zwischenmenschlichen. Anhand kurzer Rückblenden erfährt der Leser, wie Jack und Kathryn sich kennen gelernt haben und sich ihre Ehe im Laufe der Jahre entwickelte. Man durchlebt mit ihnen die ganzen Stationen einer Beziehung; von der ersten Verliebtheit bis hin zum Alltag, in dem vieles zu Gewohnheit geworden ist - eine Entwicklung, die Kathryn bislang für völlig normal hielt. Bald schon muss sie sich jedoch die Frage stellen, wie gut sie ihren Mann auch nach so vielen Jahren tatsächlich kannte.
In diesem Punkt drängt sich dem Leser schnell eine Vermutung auf, die sich am Ende auch bestätigt. Leider ist sie in den geschilderten Ausmaßen allerdings nicht mehr allzu glaubwürdig und auch die Erklärung für den Absturz ist nicht ganz zufrieden stellend, da sich für die gewählte Lösung keine Andeutungen in der Vorgeschichte finden lassen und sie somit recht konstruiert wirkt.
Abgesehen davon ist das Buch jedoch eine sehr schöne, emotional aufrührende Lektüre, die mich von Anfang an in ihren Bann gezogen hat.
FAZIT: Dank des flüssigen Erzählstils und ihrer Fähigkeit, die Gefühle ihrer Figuren gekonnt auf den Leser zu übertragen, war dies sicherlich nicht mein letztes Buch der Autorin.
