On Day 2 in Vietnam, Captain Joe Bonpensiero is handed the responsibility of the 315th TAW (Tactical Airlift Wing's) Aircraft Maintenance Unit, as all assigned officers depart taking a permanent holiday back to the ZI-(Zone of the Interior) USA. Faced with security breaches, incompetent record keeping and a bungled aircraft mechanical repair operation, Bonpensiero must cajole the unit into shape-or suffer the consequences-potentially ending his military career. He soon learns that bizarre humor, unorthodox methods and a home cooked meal is what keeps the human spirit pumping. Dinner in Happy Valley tackles the irrationality of war from a young officer's perspective in the face of incompetent leaders and possible drugged-out pilot hellions. With a nod to Korea's MASH and WWII's Catch 22, "Bomb-Dispenser's memoir is a wild and wacky tribute to his comrades-in-arms who carried on in the face of foolish bureaucratic demands, often resulting in dangerous SNAFU'S. He tells it like he lived it- the insanity of war with some of the finest enlisted and NCO's around, while some wacko officers attempt to lead the charge.
Autorenporträt
About the Author Joe Bonpensiero Born in San Diego's "Wop Town," I grew with my pals in our Italian ghetto, now known as "Little Italy." At seven years old, my father took me aboard our family fishing boat, the "Giuseppina." By my late teens, I had become a seasoned fisherman. Years later, I chronicled my experiences at sea in a memoir entitled "Chocolate Moon." My parents encouraged I pursue an education and I earned a B.A. from San Diego State University and a USAF commission--later I added, a Master's degree from Golden Gate University. Leaving the sea behind I made the Air Force my career objective. With multiple world wide tours as an aircraft maintenance and USAFE I/G inspector, I spent years in Western Europe. While serving in Germany, Time magazine's Feb 77 cover story, "Mafia, Big Bad and Booming" wrote an expose on my uncle, Mafia Hit Man, Frank Bompensiero ¬alleged murderer of over twenty people. My memoir "Niputi...the Nephew, provided personal experiences and vignettes of Mafiosi associates the public never knew about. I aired the family's dirty linen on celebrities; Liberace, Lena Horne, J. Edgar Hoover et.al. Kirkus reviewed Niputi and said, "Bonpensiero seeks to bury the hatchet about his mobster uncle. He delivers...tightly knit narrative ...entertaining...the unfolding of an American life colored by the Sicilian immigrant experience." My latest writing is entitled "Dinner in Happy Valley," a humorous take on his Vietnam tour and will remind readers of the zany WWII and Korean smash hits, Catch 22 and MASH. It is available on Amazon.com and Kindle at an introductory price of .99 cents. My next project is a fictional novel with a, working title of "Liar's Potion." I currently reside in Las Vegas, NV.
