Philip J. van der Eijk, Ph.D. (1991) Leiden, is Professor of Greek at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He has published widely on ancient medicine, philosophy, science, comparative literature and patristics. He is the author of Aristoteles. De insomniis. De divinatione per somnum (Berlin, 1994), editor of Ancient Histories of Medicine (Brill, 1999), and co-editor of Ancient Medicine in its Socio-Cultural Context (Amsterdam-Atlanta, 1995).
