Autorenporträt
Allison C. Carey is Professor of Sociology at Shippensburg University. She has been teaching and researching in the field of sociology of disability for over 25 years. Allison was one of the founders of ASA's section on Disability in Society, and served as Chair of ASA's Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities. She co-founded the Disabilities Studies program at Shippensburg, and served as its director for 6 years. She regularly teaches Sociology of Disability, Introduction to Disability Studies, and a capstone Sociology Department course on disability. Allison's published work includes: Allies and Obstacles: Disability Activism and Parents of Children with Disabilities (Temple University Press, forthcoming 2020, first author) and On the Margins of Citizenship: Intellectual Disability and Civil Rights in Twentieth Century America (Temple University Press, 2009). She has also co-edited two volumes on disability including Disability Incarcerated (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) and Disability and Community (Emerald, 2011, Volume 5 of Research in Social Science and Disability) and has a forthcoming co-edited volume Alliances, Allies and Disability (Emerald, 2020, Volume 12 of Research in Social Science and Disability). In 2021, Allison named the second recipient of the Outstanding Career in the Sociology of Disability Award from ASA′s Section on Disability in Society. The award honors a member whose career has shaped the sociology of disability field through their research, teaching, and professional service.
