This volume of the six book "Discover Hawaii's" nature series teaches young readers about the nature of Hawai'i's seashores. Readers learn about the role of currents and waves that form the beach, where sand comes from, and what causes the many colors of sands on different beaches. They learn some interesting facts about the lives and habits of common ocean plants and animals they are likely to find washed up along our beaches, as well as animals like '¿hiki (ghost crab) and plants like p¿huehue (beach morning glory) that live along the beaches. They also learn about special visitors to the beach, including monk seals, sea turtles, and a variety of shorebirds. Readers learn what tides are, and how changing tides affect the nature of seashore life. This book helps young seashore explorers identify some of the many curious and beautiful creatures they might find as they journey from the higher rocks along the shore that only get salt spray and occasional big waves, to life that stays submerged among the shallow rocks and sands in tidepools. Readers discover special areas called limestone benches and anchialine pools, and learn what to look for that lives in these places. All living systems in nature need our respect and protection, and Hawaiian seashores are no exception. This book, like others in the Discover series, concludes with some suggestions of simple things each one of us can do to help. Full color illustrations on every page. Text and illustrations are equally balanced throughout the book.

Autor

Katherine Orr is a naturalist and an educator at heart. Her love of the natural world led her to become a marine biologist and a cruising sailor, and she uses her writing and illustrating skills to help educate and inspire young readers about the natural world. She holds a graduate degree from the University of Connecticut in marine biology, and a certification from eCornell in plant-based nutrition. She spent the mid-1970s to mid-1980s living and working in islands of the Caribbean as a marine biologist and environmental educator. She has authored and illustrated numerous books and educational materials about the natural world and aspects of healthy diet and lifestyle, including the practice of qigong. She has made Hawaii her home since 1990.
