This text explores the notion of distributed leadership in relation to the social, political and economic environment within which schools are operating in South East England. The author proposes a new model for understanding how this form of leadership is enacted and offers new insights into the challenges facing schools that wish to put in place this whole school change.

Dr Rowland Speller has been writing in the field of education for over eight years and is a member of Kellogg College Oxford. He is an Assistant Headteacher at Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys in Canterbury and has conducted commissioned research for the Kent Local Authority on effective models of leadership across the region's schools.
