Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) is the main legume crop grown,by small scale farmers in Kenya. Its grains are very vital in human nutrition and alsoserve as income for peasant farmers. The yield is approximately 530 kg ha againstthe genetic potential yield of 1400 to 2000 kg ha1and the country¿s production isestimated at 613,902 tons per year. However, bean production in Kenya has kept ondeclining due to poor seed quality, poor agronomic practices, inadequate farminputs, declining soil fertility, unreliable rainfall and biotic factors. Viral diseasesare a major yield reduction factor in bean production. Bean Common MosaicDisease (BCMD), caused by Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) and Beancommon mosaic necrosis virus (BCMNV) is the most common disease with diseaseincidence of up to 100 % and yield loss of up to 98 %. Disease management technologies specifically for viral diseases that are suitable to specific agroecologicalzones and adaptable to smallholder farmers in western Kenya have notbeen evaluated. The general objective of the study was to determine the occurrenceof BCMD and the effect of seed quality and legume diversification on BCMD incidence.
