It is a possible by-product of electrically decomposed SF6, a gaseous insulator used in high voltage systems such as transmission lines, substations and switchgear. In contrast to S2F10, SF6 is essentially inert. Some S2F10 is also made during the SF6 production process, but is distilled out.
