Information holds enormous power in our globalized world that is the reason why business information systems are essential to the successful economic performance of enterprises, the enhanced information supply of decision-makers and they also play an inevitable role in helping companies to gain competitive advantage. As a consequence, possessing information is not enough, its appropriate usage and regular maintenance are also essential. Business information systems are designed to effectively facilitate the performance of these tasks since their use has become more and more widespread due to technological advancement. This research report summarizes the findings about the circumstances of making decisions on the introduction of business information systems, the problems encountered with during their implementation and the way these systems are operated by enterprises in Austria and Hungary. The connection between the IT development level and operational effectivess is also revealed while a more detailed picture is presented on the supply of business information systems and the actual IT development level of the two surveyed countries.

received his MSc in Mechanical Engineering, MSc in Economics and his PhD in Business and Organisation Sciences. Now he is an associate professor at the Institute of Business Science, Faculty of Economics, University of Miskolc, Hungary. His current research interests include different aspects of Economics, ICT and the information society.
