The reasons for the decline and fall of the world's greatest empire has inspired countless numbers of books, articles, hypotheses, studies and whole fields of discussion. What could have caused the demise of the vast Roman Empire, which at its height spread its domain across three continents - Europe, Asia and Africa - from Great Britain to modern-day Iran, including all the lands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. Although the official death came with the abdication of the last Roman emperor, Romulus Augustus, in 476, historians believe that the root causes started much earlier. However, the exact contributing factors and their emphasis are subject to a great deal of debate and speculation.
