She is the founder of The Spoken Word Society (2014) and the Spoken Word Society Writing Club (2020) in Surry County, NC. These groups were developed to provide a safe space for poets, writers, and storytellers to express their oral art presentation, in a safe, supportive, and open environment.

Millie Hiatt is a poet and storyteller who grew up in rural West Virginia, where her love of words was nurtured by her grandparents. They ran a small general store in a community deeply affected by poverty, teaching her to see people in every light and on every level.Millie is the creator and performer of the one-woman show Does a Dress Have a Life?, which later became her first published book of the same title. She is also the founder of The Spoken Word Society (2014) and the Spoken Word Society Writing Club (2020) in Surry County, NC. These organizations were created to preserve the art of oral presentation in a safe and supportive environment for poets, writers, and storytellers to share their voices.Her work is deeply rooted in fostering community and celebrating the transformative power of words.
