The Indigenous government Awards are a joint project between Reconciliation Australia and BHP Billiton to encourage, reward, and spread best practices in Indigenous government. Canada, New Zealand, and the United States have made significant improvements in the lives of their Indigenous populations. In 2001, 18.2% of Indigenous people had a degree or certificate from a school beyond high school, but improving education is the best way for economically and socially disadvantaged adults and children to get out of poverty.
