The book has documented the origin, backyard management, behaviour and parasites of domestic fowl. The domestic chicken, Gallus gallus domesticus, is believed to have descended from the wild Indian and South East Asian red jungle fowl.In India domestication of fowl is as old as its civilization. In India some of the important breeds/varieties which have been documented are Aseel, Ankaleshwar, Busra Chitagong, Daothigir, Denki, Ghagus, Haringhatta black, Kadaknath, Kalasthi, Kashmir Faverolla, Miri, Punjab Brown, Tellichery, Titri, Teni, Nicobari, Naked neck, and frizzle fowl. Backyard poultry consists of a housing structure and pastures or runs allowing animals to exhibit their natural behaviours more freely compared to closed systems. The term free-range refers to poultry production systems in which the birds have continuous daytime access to pasture and thereby, sunlight and fresh air. Both exotic or local breed of the domestic fowl, Gallus gallus domesticus, is reared by ruraland urban house holders who use their eggs and meat as source of animal protein, farm manure income.
