He was president of Southern Pacific Railroad from 1952 1964 and then chairman from 1964 1972. Mr. Russell was featured on the cover of TIME Magazine 11 August 1961 and Forbes Magazine 1 November 1965. Mr. Russell's corporate biography read: "After serving with the Royal Air Force in World War I and studying engineering at Stanford University, Mr. Russell began his railroad career with Southern Pacific in 1920 as Timekeeper of a Maintenance of Way Gang in the Sacramento Division.
