There were three steep hills to get to the village and on three sides Todenham was surrounded by the County of Warwickshire, a foreign country as far as the good folk of Todenham were concerned. Todenham, population about 220 in the early 1950's, had its characters; a village idiot, a madman, an unmarried mother, a petty criminal (the one that got caught), a homosexual (every village had one), many drunks and a girl very keen on boys from an early age called Rosie. Todenham was also unusual in that it had more than its fair share of the supernatural; a haunted Old Mill, a pub with not one but two ghosts and a haunted meadow. It also had a church with a secret.
