Autorenporträt
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) war Arzt im südenglischen Southsea. 1887 erfand er die Figur des genial-exzentrischen Detektivs Sherlock Holmes, der allein mit Hilfe seines überragenden Intellekts, durch genaue Beobachtung und logisches Kombinieren seine Fälle löst. Ab 1891 erschienen die Abenteuer des Meisterdetektivs als Serie im 'Stand Magazine', eroberten schnell eine große Fangemeinde und erlaubten es Doyle, fortan als freier Schriftsteller in London zu leben.
