There have been many books written about the great freedom fighter Dr John Garang and his crusade for South Sudan and its people. Their stories would not be heard, were it not for people like Edward Abyei Lino. Writing from the frontline, going into battle alongside his friend and leader 'Dr John', he details peace talks as well as bush battles, showing humility as he learnt from the best. Their lives were closely linked, as they shared the same longing for liberation for their people, finding the strength and fortitude to continue their struggle. It is no surprise that in later life, Edward Lino became Director General for External Security and Commander of Independent Command in Bahr el Ghazal. Edward Lino shares with us, his insight into the personal life of Commander in Chief Dr John Garang, as well as some of the words so carefully chosen at delicate peace talks with the enemy. We are fortunate to read this book, where the humanitarian philosophy of Dr John Garang has been faithfully recorded by Edward Lino, during their many years together on the war front as well as around the diplomatic table.
