I am one of the older new authors. While I've shared stories with family and friends, I only recently dedicated myself to pursuing a writing career. Life's journey and the various adventures therein have varied from fantastic to "How the hell did I get here." Along the way, I've encountered both remarkable and less-than-remarkable individuals. You've heard about an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other; well, there is a third entity most writers have: the quiddity. The quiddity whispers in the writer's ear about an idea for their next story, the next scene, chapter, characters, etc. The quiddity has taken a better position than the angel or devil because it's stretched out on the curve of the ear's bowl-shaped concha, arms behind its head. From such a position, the faintest whisper can be heard, even over the angel and devil arguing. I can't say when my quiddity took up residence, but I can remember sitting in a tree with friends and making up stories at a very young age.
