Cherokee Freechild (author) - Cherokee Freechild grew up in the Deep South during the Civil Rights struggle. Oral history says her tiny hometown was founded by Cherokee families fleeing the Trail of Tears by passing as white. They succeeded so well that no trace of their language or culture remains, but her family did retain a tradition of Appalachian folk magic.
