The Durrani Empire was a large state based in modern Afghanistan and Pakistan and later included northeastern Iran and even parts of eastern Punjab, India. It was founded at Kandahar in 1747 by a Pashtun military commander, Ahmad Shah Durrani. After the death of Ahmad Shah in 1772, the Emirship was passed onto his children and grandchildren. Ahmad Shah and his descendants were from the Sadozai line of the Abdali Pashtuns, making them the second Pashtun rulers of Kandahar, after the Hotaki Ghilzais.
