The stratum corneum (SC) plays a crucial role in keeping an optimal skin barrier function, regulating the water-holding capacity. This experimental study shows that Dynamic Vapour Sorption (DVS) can be used to assess the hydration and dehydration characteristics of SC with intact or modified lipid structure. A future application of the DVS method could be the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the damaging effect of chemical compounds, such as a single surfactant or a mixture of surfactants. We can directly test the finished product or the raw material before formulating.

Andrea Baratto, born in Belluno , graduated in chemistry and pharmaceutical technology at the Department of Pharmacy at Padua, enrolled in the register of pharmacists. He carried an internship at Studio Rigano in Milan, cosmetic formulation laboratory.
