Mumbai, like any other metropolis has been attracting a large number of migrants from different parts of the country. Presumably a significant proportion of these migrants are drawn from the lower socio-economic strata of the society. More than half of the population of Greater Mumbai is composed of the slum dwellers that live in tenements/huts, on pavements along railway track, under the bridges and in other spaces available to them. A study of six hundred and seventy six slum households spread over three selected slums of Mumbai city indicated that the slum dwellers have low socio-economic profile and are burdened with unhealthy living condition. The shoddy living conditions, improper life style and food habits make them prone to infectious diseases. The suffering is doubled because they neglect minor ailments. They never neglect their children s illness The Government should make concerted efforts to improve the sanitary and living condition of the slum dwellers which in turn will have impact on their children s well being.
