Earth itself is sphere-shaped, and Earth's spheres are layers surrounding Earth. The geosphere is the part of Earth we live on and includes the rocky crust and the mantle and core below the crust. The hydrosphere is made up of all the water on Earth, including lakes, streams, oceans, ice, rain, and snow. The biosphere is made up of all the living things on Earth. The atmosphere is made up of all the air that surrounds Earth and contains the air we breathe. Weather occurs in the atmosphere. The magnetosphere is formed by energy from the Sun interacting with the magnetic field surrounding Earth in space. It protects Earth from getting too much energy from the Sun. Each sphere is important in making it possible for life to exist on Earth. The spheres can be studied separately or together to learn how Earth works. Dr. Rebecca Woodbury, founder of Gravitas Publications Inc., has over two decades of experience in science education. With a background in biophysical chemistry, she created the Real Science-4-Kids product line in 2003 to support home educators. In 2020, she introduced RATATAZ, an innovative learning model that combines in-depth content with student-driven inquiries and project-based learning. Dr. Woodbury recently completed her M.Ed. in curriculum and instructional design, further enhancing her educational materials. She relocated her team to Tempe, AZ, in 2023 to better serve both homeschool parents and school educators.
