Armed conflict is always a disaster. International law seeks to protect civilians and combatants during war and to bring those responsible to justice. But the environment suffers from hostilities often for years to come, which is not always taken into account when conducting military operations and very rarely when considering State responsibility. This work is an attempt to analyse the difficulties and gaps in international legal protection of the environment in the context of the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine and to propose solutions based on international humanitarian and environmental law.
