After reviewing theories about how women are likely to fare as a result of economic development, the editors and their contributors focus on the socioeconomic status of women and changes in it as a result of processes of economic development in individual countries in five continents. KARTIK C. ROY is Associate Professor, Department of Economics at the University of Queensland. He is also Adjunct Professor at the Swedish School of Economics and Business in Helsinki, Finland, and has authored of 19 previous books and 40 articles in international journals. CLEMENT A. TISDELL is Professor of Economics at the University of Queensland. HANS C. BLOMQVIST is Associate Professor of Economics at the Swedish School of Economics and Business Administration in Helsinki, Finland.
