The issue of student and teacher leadership has been promoted as a priority in many Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in Mexico, with the objective of training graduates who not only know how to perform professionally, but also become leaders who promote innovation and creativity, coordinate multidisciplinary work teams, solve contextual problems, and consolidate the country's integral development in strategic areas. This publication presents the advances and limitations that these institutional changes have had in strengthening student and teacher leadership in some of the most important national HEIs in the last 40 years (1980 - 2020).
