He moved to Iowa in 1856 and began his longtime career in the railroad industry as a conductor. When the Civil War began Winslow enlisted in the 4th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Cavalry as Captain. He was promoted to Major in 1863 and was wounded in a minor engagement at Twelve Mile Creek, Mississippi.
