Edward Clark was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Educated in California, he attended Our Lady Queen of Angels Seminary in San Fernando and St. John's Seminary in Camarillo. Clark was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Timothy Manning on May 9, 1972, and then served in pastoral assignments in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. From 1985 to 1988, he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he earned a doctorate in theology. He served as Coordinator of Religious Instruction for Secondary Schools from 1988 to 1990, and was named Rector-President of St. John's Seminary in 1994. On January 16, 2001, Clark was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles and Titular Bishop of Gardar by Pope John Paul II
