The gameplay in Ef follows a plot line which offers pre-determined scenarios with courses of interaction, and focuses on the appeal of the four female main characters. There are four protagonists the player will have a chance to assume the role of; two in Ef: The First Tale., and two in Ef: The Latter Tale.. Each protagonist is paired with one heroine and the two eventually fall in love. This romantic relationship ultimately leads to a scene where the given protagonist has sexual intercourse with the given main heroine.
