Low back pain is one of the leading causes of disability. According to one estimate, almost 40% of chronic low back pain originates in the intervertebral disc. Conservative management is usually preferred over operative management in patients with discogenic back pain. Physical therapy for discogenic low back pain with radiculopathy includes - back extension exercises, lumbar traction19 hot fomentation, TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator), core stabilization exercises, pilates exercises, various manual therapy protocol including spinal manipulations, McKenzie approach, Maitlands mobilization, myofascial release, etc. Limited literature available on ideal physiotherapy protocol for treating discogenic back pain patients, although enough literature suggested the benefits of physical therapy in treating back pain. Recently, evidences on the effectiveness of manual therapy techniques for treating back pain are reported in the literature. However, due to less evidence onthe efficacy of spinal oscillatory technique (lumbar rotational mobilization) based on Maitland's concept, in reducing pain and disability associated with discogenic back pain, this RCT was conducter.
