Seeds of Terminalia mentalis(T.mantaly) were subjected to some pretreatment techniques aimed at enhancing germination.The pretreatments were: Boiled seeds,Nipped seeds,Cold water soaking,No pretreatment(CONTROL),and Sulphuric acid scarification(SAS).Nipping tended to enhance considerably the rate of germination of T.mantaly.It requires certain experience but apart from a pair of secateurs,no further input is required.

The writer is a seasoned Forester with 30 years of Forestrybackground.He presently holds a Masters degree in Agroforestryfrom the University of Wales Bangor,now Bangor University inWales,United Kingdom.He acquired the saiddegree in 2002-2003.Presently he is a research scientist with Kenya Forestry ResearchInstitute(KEFRI) in Kitui.
