Simvastatin, a hypolipidemic drug has been recently introduced into the field of periodontics due to its pleiotropic actions like anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and bone regenerative properties. Inflammatory cytokines like Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Interleukin-8 (IL-8) have found to be established biochemical markers of periodontal regeneration. Hence the present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of 1.2% simvastatin gel as local drug delivery system on Gingival Crevicular Fluid IL-6 and IL-8 levels in chronic periodontitis patients. 46 chronic periodontitis patients were equally divided into two groups, where Group I received treatment of Scaling & Root Planing alone and Group II received Scaling & Root Planing along with sub gingival local drug delivery of 1.2% simvastatin gel. The effect of the above treatments were assessed using clinical and Biochemical methods. The results of this study showed that 1.2% Simvastatin gel acts as an effective local drug delivery agent, adjunct to Scaling and Root Planing, in chronic periodontitis patients by demonstrating its ability to decrease the inflammation by reducing the inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and IL-8.
