Isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) is the most ordinary form of hypertension in the elderly population. It is a better predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality than diastolic blood pressure. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effectiveness of various anti-hypertensive drugs and their combinations on systolic blood pressure in elderly patients.Uncontrolled or poorly controlled systolic hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the elderly population. Proper control of SBP by using appropriate medicine may improve the quality of life and productivity of the elderly population. Our study shows that telmisartan or ramipril as single-drug therapy provides good control of elevated SBP but a combination of two drugs carvedilol with a thiazide diuretic or CCB with thiazide diuretic has provided better control of elevated systolic blood pressure.
